School Visits: Discovery Lab Classes

About the Discovery Lab
Chabot Space & Science Center is proud to present the Discovery Lab — an innovative and dynamic learning environment for preschool and K-2 children. This unique venue was designed by educators, scientists, and exhibit specialists to incorporate the best practices in early childhood education. Young minds will be enchanted by Wentzscopes, videoflex cameras, and activity kits. K-2 school classes are invited to programs on weekday mornings, while families with 4-7 year olds enjoy the room in the afternoons.

The Discoverers Club: Two afternoons a month, the Discovery Lab is made available to our Discoverers Club, a place for Discoverers Club members and their young children to explore science together. Guided club activities include simple experiments, story telling, costume play, cooking fun, and more.

  • Gentle Giants
    Grades Pre-K-2
Why are we the only planet in our solar system with trees? Explore their purpose; learn the parts of trees and how they grow. We will tour the forest and meet these gentle giants and meet the trees and other plants that share the forest floor. We will also recycle tree elements through papermaking.

    Our Five Senses
    Grades Pre-K-K
Explore the senses of touch, taste, sound, sight and smell. In this open lab, children will be free to move about on a hunt to engage the senses. The young child will experience visual and tactile encounters with an emphasis on light, color and textures. Children will explore the senses through body drawings, clay modeling, listening to shells, peeking through microscopes and handling a variety of tactile objects.

    Our Place In The Universe
    Grades 1-2
Our solar system is so unique and diverse that no two planets are exactly alike. How do the planets move together? What is space? Can humans live on other planets? Take an imaginary journey into our solar system to answer these and other questions. Build a spacecraft to reach your planet. Create and design a landscape for your planet.
