School Visits:
Environmental Science Classes
Weather permitting, all Environmental Sciences courses include some outdoor work. Students and chaperones should dress accordingly.
Atmospheres in Balance
Grades 5-8
What is an atmosphere? How are life and air connected? How do humans impact air quality? Discover our relationship with the atmosphere around us. Students will observe and record weather conditions outside Chabot and compare Earth's atmosphere with the dense atmosphere of Venus and the thin atmosphere of Mars. Climate, climate change and ozone depletion topics will also be covered.
Grades 9-12
In addition, high school level students will be introduced to advanced principles of meteorology (including adiabatic warming and cooling and pressure gradients) as well as broader atmospheric science topics such as gas interactions, climate modeling, and satellite observation systems.
Energy Alternatives in the Space Age
Grade 5-8
How much power do you need? In this class, students look at current energy consumption patterns around the world and discover the potential for alternative sources such as solar, wind and hydropower to fuel the energy needs of the 21st century and beyond. Students will learn that they have the capability to generate their own energy.
Garden Plan-It
Grades K-5
Earth is the only "green" planet that we know about. Why? Study the peculiar conditions of Earth that make it habitable for life. Students will study Chabot's outdoor Enviro-Garden, and discuss plant needs, garden microclimates, and useful and harmful garden insects and other creatures. Discover ways that personal, community and school gardens can conserve Earth's resources and energy.
Grades 6-8
For middle school groups, we will take a more in-depth look at sun cycles, climate patterns, and soil conditions in our studies. (Prerequisite: Bring a sketch of your own schoolyard).
Spaceship Earth
Grades 2-6
How much food would you need to take with you to Mars? What will you do with your "leftovers" after each meal? We will use composting, recycling, and energy efficiency as examples of closing the cycle of resources, both in space and on Earth. Chabot’s facility is introduced as a model for efficiency in energy and resource use.
Watershed Ecology
Grades 4-6
What is the connection between water and life? Where else might water exist in our solar system besides Earth? Students will examine water cycles on Earth, study creek critters, their habitats, and their interconnections, explore Chabot's Enviro-Garden pond and build their own model of Oakland's Sausal Creek watershed.
