Planetary Landscapes:
Sculpting the Solar System
Imagine passing your hand through a cauldron of billowing fog, or creating a network of streams in fine powder. Such possibilities exist in Chabot’s permanent exhibit Planetary Landscapes: Sculpting the Solar System. The exhibit includes 14 interactive sculptures
-- visual and tactile analogies to natural processes -- that will entice your students to observe and modify forces that exist on Earth and elsewhere in the Solar System. Sculptures such as "Icy Bodies," "Dust Devils," and "Turbulent Orb" reveal the infinite variations and effects of forces in nature, and the common behaviors, forms, and patterns that emerge. Stunning photographic images link the sculptures to other planets, stars, and moons in our Solar System.
In addition to the special, targeted class described below, teachers
are invited to use the curriculum especially designed for use with this
exhibit. This curriculum will be sent to all teachers with their
reservation confirmation.
Planetary Landscapes: Sculpting The Solar System
Grades 4-6
In this physical sciences course, students explore natural phenomena occurring on celestial bodies in the Solar System. Students will discuss the science behind a select group of exhibit pieces, and use the lab for hands-on activities that focus on related geological processes such as convection or volcanism. Schedule
