The Fantastic Films:Short Films and a Discussion with Bay Area International Children’s Film Festival Co-founder Jim Capobianco

7-9pm

In honor of the 10th anniversary of the Bay Area International Children’s Film Festival, join us for a lively discussion with BAICFF programmer, co-founder, and filmmaker Jim Capobianco. Jim will show some of the short films he has created independently and at Pixar. Fellow BAICFF co-founder, Shelley Trott, will lead a discussion with Jim on his 25-year career in animation and discuss what, in his opinion, makes a great short film. Audience participation is encouraged as we uncover the magic behind the scenes of some of our favorite short films. This is an event not to miss!

Jim Capobianco received the 2008 Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay for Ratatouille. He went on to write and direct the short film, "Your Friend The Rat,” found on the Ratatouille DVD, winning the 2008 ASIFA-Hollywood Annie Award for short films. Jim followed YFtR up with directing the critically acclaimed end titles for Pixar’s 2008 release Wall•E.

A graduate of California Institute of the Arts, Jim started in the story department at Walt Disney Feature Animation on The Lion King. After five years at Disney, Jim relocated to Pixar Animation Studios where he was influential on the stories of many of Pixar’s films of the past 19 years, including Toy Story 2, Finding Nemo, UP and Inside Out. In 2009, Jim finished  "Leonardo” his first independent film, now in the permanent collection of the MoMA NYC.

In addition to his work as a filmmaker, Jim co-created the Bay Area International Children’s Film Festival now in its 10th year. Now with Aerial Contrivance Workshop, Jim is creating and producing in connection to Walt Disney Motion Pictures the new 2D animated sequence for Mary Poppins Returns.

WORKSHOPS
Children can learn filmmaking techniques and produce their own short, animated video by enrolling in the workshops listed below:

The workshops require a fee in addition to the film festival tickets and are instructed by filmmakers and animators from Berkeley City College's Multimedia program. Each day workshop films can be seen on a big screen in the afternoons of the festival.  Films produced in the workshops will be available for download by participants.

Clay Puppet Workshop
Our most popular workshop! Decorate and film your very own professional stop-motion puppet and take the puppet home with you. Spend the first half of the workshop personalizing your "actor” with googly eyes, buttons, feathers, etc. Then lights, camera, action – it’s time to make your puppet come alive. Use your imagination to place your little "actor” in a series of poses that add up to action!

Pixilation & Foley Workshops
What is Pixilation? It’s an animation technique that uses the most readily available tool at your disposal – your body! In this workshop, the participants are the actors. Just change your pose slightly from one photo frame to the next and you will magically float, fly around a room, ice skate, disappear and reappear in a different location, slide along the ground, drive an invisible car, or almost anything else you can imagine!

You add the sound! In addition to creating your film using pixilation you will then add your own sound effects in our Foley Sound workshop. At no additional cost, we will record you creating noises on our foley stage to the live playback of your pixilation film. We will provide a variety of noise making objects and props, you can even use your own mouth to make explosions - boom!, car engine noises - vroom! vroom! or other bips and boops.

How to Be a Kid Critic: "Meerkat Moonship" (Media Education Workshop)
We're delighted to work with Common Sense Media to present "How to Be a Kid Critic: Meerkat Moonship" at this year's festival. Our children are consuming an enormous amount of media, often filled with conflicting information. "We can't cover our kids' eyes, but we can teach them to see," said Common Sense Media's founding editor in chief, Liz Perle. In this workshop, kids who've seen the feature film Meerkat Moonship will learn what it means to evaluate media critically through discussion and hands-on activities based on Common Sense's unique rating system.
