Summer Camp Counselor

Chabot Space and Science Center is seeking several enthusiastic Camp Counselors to support the weekly science teaching, outdoor learning, and daily functioning of the Chabot Summer Camp Program. The hourly rate of pay for this position will be $18.50/hour. This is an exciting opportunity to join our dynamic group of educators to build, create, tinker, and play all summer long. The six-week program features four different science and engineering themes: Mars Adventure, Operation Moon Base, Camp Create, and Eco-Animation. Designed for students entering grades 1-6, each week-long camp will provide immersive, hands-on learning experiences combining science, engineering, and outdoor explorations to develop problem-solving skills as well as science understanding.  The camp serves 360-400 elementary students with alignment to the Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards.

Essential Functions:

Work with Chabot’s Education Team to lead weekly themed summer camps

Serve as Camp Counselors for summer camp groups of up to 20 youth in grades 1-6

Set up appropriate classroom learning environments

Assist with program materials and supplies

Maintain classrooms, labs, prep and storage areas

Develop and improve facilitation skills in various science content areas and teaching


Work collaboratively with other staff and volunteers to insure outstanding visitor experiences.

Lead outdoor activities, games, and nature walks

Facilitate camp check-in/out procedures at the beginning and end of the day

Manage before and after care spaces for campersQualifications:


Be available every weekday from Monday, June 18 – Friday, August 10, 2018 (not including July 4) between the hours of 8:00am and 6:00pm for the following:

1 week of camp training, June 18-22

6 weeks of camp instruction and before/aftercare, June 25 – August 3

1 week of clean-up/wrap-up, August 6-10


Camp Counselors will be employed no earlier than June 18th and no later than August 10th.

Counselors will report to the Summer Camp Director.

Position is full time, temporary, hourly and non-benefited.


Requirements:

Experience working well with elementary-aged students

Ability to speak in front of various audiences

Excellent interpersonal skills

Strong organizational skills

Comfortable working outdoors on trails and in the nearby regional park

Ability to collaborate with Camp Director, Chabot staff, Camp Counselors and adult and teen volunteers to create a highly engaging and memorable experience for youth participants.

Ability to hike on trails and lift/carry up to 20 pounds

Employment eligibility that may include fingerprints, background check, Tuberculosis screening, and/or other employment clearance


Preferred qualifications:

Science background and knowledge of various science content areas

Demonstrated skills with teaching science programs

Comfort and facility working with elementary aged students in both indoor and outdoor settings

Knowledge of formal and informal science education best practices

Undergraduate degree




Qualifications:

Previous experience serving as a camp counselor

  • Interest in teaching STEM subjects in a fun, engaging and dynamic camp environment.
  • Excellent classroom management, communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to communicate and deliver programs in different languages (especially Spanish) a plus.
