Grantwriter

Under general supervision responsible for identifying corporate, foundation and government grant funding sources; writing grant applications as determined by guidelines; and submitting grant applications and reports based on required deadlines. Specific focus is on securing funding for Chabot Space & Science Center’s educational programs, general operating support and major exhibitions.

Responsibilities

  • Identify program priorities and funding opportunities that coincide with grant opportunities.
  • Maintains existing schedule of grant submissions based on renewal cycle and current proposal requirements. Works with appropriate staff to discuss and present program/project information, case development, budgets, etc. Maintains current reporting schedule (quarterly and/or annual) for existing grant awards. Work with appropriate staff to present current program/project information, status, results, budgetary information and any other requirements.
  • Research new funding sources at local, state and federal levels as well as with corporate and private foundations on an on-going basis. Upon review of guidelines discusses prospects with development manager and advises on strategy, gift level and probability of award. Adds new grant applications to schedule.
  • Writes/edits proposals to ensure accuracy, completeness, and clarity as outlined in proposal requirements. Work with program staff to develop budgets and ensure that budgetary information coincides with narrative in all grant applications. Ensures that internal deadlines related to grant applications are met. Prepares and reviews final application/proposal package and submits them to prospective funders by required deadlines.
  • Works with potential funders to obtain information about submission of grants (e.g. deadlines, grant requirements and specifications, appropriate formats, progress reports, etc). Establishes contact and rapport with grant agency representatives.
  • Establishes and maintains up-to-date files for standard grant application attachments.
  • Provide weekly updates on grant activity to Development Manager.
  • Compile, organize, analyze and maintain background information and supporting documentation related to grant applications/proposals and reports. Enters information and updates database accordingly to ensure current information.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of grant application process, including research and writing of applications.
  • Excellent organization skills
  • Excellent writing, editing and oral communication skills. Highly detailed oriented.
  • Ability to accept constructive feedback.
  • Must be computer literate; knowledge of spreadsheets and databases preferred (Experience with Black baud’s Raiser’s Edge a plus). Ability to plan, prioritize and coordinate multiple projects.
  • Experience with a wide variety of funding sources, including foundations, government agencies and other educational funding sources. Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, interpret, and apply government regulations and proposal guidelines.

A Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in communications, technical or interpretive writing, business or public administration, education, or a closely related field. Two years of grant writing experience is required, preferably in informal STEM educational programs or related field.

Compensation

Salary for this position is commensurate with other non-profit organizations and will be commensurate with experience.
