Director of Advancement

Chabot Space and Science Center seeks an innovative professional with superb interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills to lead all aspects of the Center’s fundraising and external affairs program.  This challenging opportunity will provide the right individual with many opportunities to thrive in a leadership role, impacting the strategy and development of the Center.  Reporting to the new Executive Director/CEO, the Director of Advancement will design and implement annual and programmatic fundraising campaigns, working closely with the Board of Directors and Center staff.

Responsibilities

Strategic Planning:

  • Member of CSSC Senior Management Team, participating in Center transition and strategic planning process.

  • Develop and maintain a fundraising plan that includes identification, cultivation and solicitation of donations from all sources. Prepare and manage toward achieving annual fundraising and membership goals, and special projects in consultation with staff, the Board of Directors, and CEO/Executive Director.

  • Provide strategic marketing focus to CSSC communications plan with particular emphasis on strategic positioning for funding purposes.

  • Prepare annual plan to steward and advance key public and private partnerships.

  • Foster a culture of high achievement and accountability for meeting shared goals

  • Develop a system to ensure donor recognition and adherence to standard gift acceptance practices.

 

Fundraising:

  • Identify and manage a portfolio of major prospects through all stages of cultivation and solicitation and close of major gifts.  

  • Counsel and prepare the Executive Director and leadership volunteers in cultivation and solicitation of prospects and donors, including strategy, tracking and follow-up efforts. 

  • Collaborate with program staff on foundation and government grants and reports.

  • Supervise and inspire Advancement staff responsible for membership and general annual campaign program.

  • In conjunction with Executive Director and Board of Directors, evaluate, develop, implement a possible comprehensive campaign.

  • Evaluate and provide strategic direction for annual fundraising events, such as the Starlight Gala.

 

Public Relations, Communications, Marketing:

  • Work closely with the Executive Director to develop a public relations and marketing plan.

  • Oversee development of marketing documentation, collateral materials, print and electronic publications (Annual Report, eVoyager Newsletter, etc), web communications, and creative marketing concepts in support of all CSSC programs to optimize attendance, facility rentals and contributions.

  • Collaborate on strategic direction for all design and messaging of CSSC, in print and electronic form.

  • Manage media relations through staff and any 3rd party agency resources utilized by CSSC.

  • Develop and implement strategies to promote Chabot Space & Science Center’s mission to all of the Center’s constituencies.

 

Government Affairs:

  • Support efforts, with Executive Director and Board of Directors to actively cultivate public support through outreach to elected and appointed officials.

 

Board Relations:

  • Work with Board leadership to set and meet fundraising goals.

  • Staff and provide direction to the Development Committee of the Board

  • Develop fundraising training for Board and other leadership volunteers.

  • Assume responsibility for all development reports to the Board and other agencies, and attend all Board meetings.

  • Assist the Board with identifying and researching potential new members.

 

Management & Supervision:

  • Set and guide priorities for the Institutional Advancement Department and staff.

  • Supervise Advancement personnel, which includes work allocation, staffing, vacation requests, training, and problem resolution; evaluate performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve maximum productivity and performance.

 

Financial Responsibility:

  • Broad financial responsibility including setting and meeting fundraising goals, evaluating results and developing corrective strategies as needed.  Develop and manage departmental budget. Ensure that financial accounting of grants and gifts are maintained according to GASB standards.

  • Oversee grant proposals in collaboration with Executive Director and program staff and oversee grants reporting deadline calendar.

Requirements

  • Strong organizational and strategic planning skills, along with excellent public and written communication and presentation skills. 

  • Knowledge of and experience with annual campaigns, membership programs, major giving, foundation and corporate relations and comprehensive campaigns is highly desirable.  Demonstrated leadership ability with a commitment to the organization’s mission is essential. 

  • Successful track record of personally identifying, cultivating and soliciting individual donors, corporations and foundations.

  • Knowledge of marketing and public relations and how they integrate successfully with fundraising

  • Ability to motivate and collaborate with staff and volunteers in leadership roles.

 

Ideal candidates will bring a strong work ethic, entrepreneurial and collaborative spirit, enthusiasm, creativity, a minimum of 6 years of fundraising experience working with staff, board members and fund raising volunteers.

Compensation

Salary for this position is commensurate with other non-profit organizations and will be commensurate with experience.
