Letter from the CEO

Aah - wintertime. Don't you just love it when it's cold and rainy outside and you can snuggle up indoors in front of the fire reading your favorite book or watching Star Wars - The Empire Strikes Back for the 20th time? Me too, but we've been out of luck this year... at least here in California where we've had the driest year on record apparently since record keeping began in 1849!

Still, the fine Spring weather does mean it's a great time to get up into the hills and onto the hiking and biking trails... and if you're thinking of doing that you should make a day of it and include a side-trip to Chabot. We are fortunate to be located in the midst of three fabulous redwood parks - Redwood Regional, Roberts and Joaquin Miller - so come up and check out the rural side of Oakland and when you've had your fill of physical exercise why not drop by the Center and give your 'little grey cells' a bit of a workout.

I took a quick look at our Spring calendar the other day and I must say that our programming team have put together a terrific season of events and activities to stimulate the mind for all ages in the family - even the dog! From Tykes Explorers classes, and First Fridays for Fido, to Nerd Nite and Pi Day (can’t wait!), Galileo’s birthday and Nano Days, and on April 14th a total Lunar Eclipse. And then of course there are our regular Night Hikes, Star Stories, Future Fridays Speaker Series and our live Planetarium show. You can find full details as they become available and book tickets for all these activities here.

Oh - and don't forget - Laserium! Yes... by popular demand we've been able to extend the "cosmic laser concert" through April so if you haven't seen it yet I highly recommend booking tickets in the next couple of months. We've also added Led Zeppelin and U2 to the ever popular Pink Floyd and Beatles sound tracks. So... choose your favorite rock band, get your popcorn, sit back in your reclining seat in the Planetarium, and enjoy the live laser experience - it really is music for the eyes.

And while all this is going on we are also entering into our busiest season for school field trips at Chabot. Every year we see about 50,000 students visiting us on field trips, with students taking classes in geology, chemistry, space, biology, climate change, and history of science - as well as having time to explore our hands on exhibits like Bill Nye's Climate Lab, and touring the historic telescopes. We are extremely proud of the important role Chabot continues to play in providing thousands of Bay Area students with the opportunity and encouragement to be inspired by science.

So - come on up... and be inspired yourself! We look forward to seeing you at Chabot this Spring.

All the best.
