MAY: In the Garden

For the final session of our Living Earth unit, we will learn what living organism need to stay alive and how worms help many plants live by making vermicompost. We'll finish the session with a day planting fruits and vegetables in the Chabot garden!

  • Tuesday, May 7: Keep Me Alive!
    (10am, 12:30pm or 3pm)
Is a rock alive? What about a plant or a bug? How do you know? This week we'll figure out what kinds of things are living organisms and what those organisms need to stay alive.
  • Tuesday, May 14: Worms in the Garden
    (10am, 12:30pm or 3pm)
Help our Chabot worms by feeding them food scraps, and learn how they make nutritious soil called vermicompost. Then make worm tea to feed to our plants.
  • Tuesday, May 28: Sowing Seeds
    (10am, 12:30pm or 3pm)
How can I help a plant grow? What do plants need to stay alive? Join us this week to answer these questions as we plant seeds in our Chabot garden.

JUNE: What's the Earth Made Of?

This series begins with a tour of the earth- inside and out! Then learn how our earth makes all the different types of rocks we see. Finally we’ll look inside the rocks to find fossils of animals that lived long ago.

  • Tuesday, June 11: This Pretty Planet
    (10am or 2pm)
If you could walk around the entire earth, what kinds of landscapes would see? If you dig all the way to center of the Earth, what will you find? Come and explore our home planet, inside and out!
  • Tuesday, June 18: Rock 'n' Roll!
    (10am or 2pm)
Have you ever wondered where rocks come from? Or why there are so many different types? Take a closer look at rocks and learn how they were made. You can even bring a rock from home to figure out how it was formed!
  • Tuesday, June 25: Secret Stones
    (10am or 2pm)
This week we'll discover the secrets some stones hide... like dinosaur fossils! Discover how fossils form and what we can learn from them, handle real fossils, and make one to take home.

JULY: Water, Water Everywhere!

Join us as we discover different properties of water and explore incredible water habitats including kelp forests.

  • Tuesday, July 9: Drip, Drip, Drop!
    (10am or 2pm)
Become a water phase expert by exploring some of the unique properties of liquid water, blowing off some steam, and making art using ice cubes!
  • Tuesday, July 16: Sink or Float?
    (10am or 2pm)
Explore the concept of density as you discover what things float in water, what things do not, and why. Then make your own density column to take, and construct a boat and test how much it can hold before it sinks!
  • Tuesday, July 30: Living Under Water
    (10am or 2pm)
Learn about an underwater forest that doesn't have a single tree! Kelp Forests are large marine ecosystems with all types of living things. Come and see what lies just beneath the surface of our oceans.

AUGUST: Extreme Travel!

Learn about airplanes, submarines, and space crafts as we take a journey high in the sky, deep in the ocean, and in to space!

  • Tuesday, August 6: Ze Plane! Ze Plane!
    (10am or 2pm)
Experiment with Bernoulli's principal and air to learn how airplanes fly. Then build and test your own paper airplanes and helicopters.
  • Tuesday, August 13: Under the Sea
    (10am or 2pm)
Explore the depths of the ocean as we travel 10,000 leagues under the sea in a submarine! Find out why we need to use a submarine, and observe strange marine creatures and ocean landscapes on our journey.
  • Tuesday, August 20: Blast Off!
    (10am or 2pm)
Learn all about the biggest, most powerful rocket ever built - the Saturn V, the same rocket that took 12 astronauts to the moon! Then go on a simulated space flight aboard the Discovery Shuttle as we travel to the International Space Station and figure out what astronauts are doing up there.
