Internships

Chabot Space & Science Center offers unpaid internships each year. Interns work directly with Chabot staff toward a goal of creating a world-class education and entertainment experience. Duties are varied and individuals will be matched to assignments based on fields of interest and the needs of the Science Center.

Who can apply?

Internships are designed for undergraduate students who have completed a minimum of one year of study (or the equivalent), graduate students, recent graduates (no more than two years out of school), and career-changers currently enrolled in a degree program.

Time commitment

Chabot Space & Science Center internships are 3 - 6 months long (full or part time). However, the duration and hours required may vary depending on internship area. International students are invited to apply. College credit may be available through your college or university.

  • Environmental Intern

    Read Summary

    Education

    Applications are currently being accepted for environmental internship positions at Chabot Space & Science Center in Oakland. This position is focused on waste management, sustainability and public education.

    Internship Focus:

    • Waste Diversion Education: Run Zero Waste Lunch Program during lunches Wednesdays - Saturdays to help educate visitors (especially visiting students and families) about waste diversion through reuse, recycling and composting.
    • Recycling and Solid Waste Tracking: Weigh and record weights of compost, recycling and trash produced from the lunches to track success of Zero Waste Lunch Program. Conduct monthly waste audits of the lunch area and record findings to get a good estimate of actual and optimal waste diversion rates.
    • Environmental Science Education: Assist in classrooms on topics such as renewable energy, atmospheric science and gardening and composting.
    • General: Maintain Chabot's recycling, composting and garden facilities. Research further ways to improve Chabot's sustainability endeavors. Attend green team meetings and create monthly environmental staff challenges.

  • Exhibit Designer

    Experience Design

    Chabot Space & Science Center seeks a creative, multi-talented individual to join its Experience Design team. The Exhibit Designer is responsible for the visualization and design of new exhibitions and environments in the Center. S/he insures that Chabot offers innovative, engaging visitor experiences that are visitor-focused, content-rich, aesthetically engaging, and support the organization's mission and achievement of strategic goals. The Exhibit Designer is a key role in Chabot's Experience Design team, working as a creative catalyst on permanent and temporary/traveling exhibitions and other public spaces and design projects. S/he develops three-dimensional exhibits and interior environments, drafts concept and design drawings, prepares specifications and project documentation, supervises implementation of design intent during fabrication and installation, and provides project management during planning, design, development, production, fabrication and installation.

    This is a grant-funded position. The Exhibit Designer reports to the Senior Manager of Experience Design. This full-time position is located on-site in Oakland, CA.
