Science Visualizer
Develops, designs and delivers live planetarium shows to create unique visitor experiences. Researches and implements new data and visualizations for the relation of scientific discoveries to the general public. Serves as an informational resource for support of staff. Works with the Theatre Manager, Technology Manager, and outside contractors to maintain, upgrade and expand planetarium systems.
Responsiblities
Public Shows:
- Create and deliver entertaining and educational shows for diverse audiences that fully utilize the planetarium’s technologies.
- Collaborate with the programs staff and curriculum planners to design, develop and present planetarium shows appropriate for K-12 education and the general public.
- Identify and consult with science and technology content advisors as appropriate.
- Maintain an understanding of current Earth science, astronomy and general scientific thought
Maintenance and Training:
- Work directly with software vendors to expand Chabot’s capabilities and improve the various software packages and data at our disposal
- Develop methods to best make use of the software and data available in the planetarium and make those resources available and accessible to other staff members for educational and public programs.
- Train other staff members in the use and operation of planetarium systems.
- Cooperate with planetarium staff and vendors in the installation, testing, upgrading, maintenance, diagnosis and repair of all software and equipment relating to the planetarium.
- Participate in general housekeeping and facility maintenance efforts for the planetarium.
- Assist in the evaluation and selection of new programs for the planetarium; ready selected programs for public display
Other:
- Assist and support in various technological and scientific capacities for events and special programs throughout Chabot
- Serve in a science communication capacity for media and outreach purposes
- Create and maintains Chabot’s monthly star charts
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Knowledge and general understanding of observational and theoretical astronomy.
- Ability to communicate the basic principles of astronomy, astrophysics, and the other natural sciences to general and age/knowledge-specific audiences.
- Skill, knowledge and understanding of planetarium show development and production for age/knowledge-specific audiences.
- Ability to create content for the dome environment utilizing proper production techniques.
- Skill, knowledge and understanding of multimedia design, production and implementation.
- Skill in photography and digital imaging.
- Knowledge and understanding of all aspects of informal science education practices and principles.
- Knowledge and understanding of computer hardware and applications, projection and audio equipment, control systems and other specialized technologies.
Compensation
Salary for this position is commensurate with other non-profit organizations and will be commensurate with experience.
