Development Manager

The Development Manager provides management and coordination for all Chabot annual fund and membership program efforts to meet the organization’s annual and long-term development/fundraising goals. Working with the Director of Institutional Advancement, the Development Manager plays a key role in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting donors for annual gifts and ongoing programs. In addition, supports leadership in securing capital, leadership, legacy and endowment gifts. Working with the public programs staff, education staff, and grant writer, the Development Manager provides strategic direction and coordinates grant solicitation efforts as a primary contact and coordinator for corporate, foundation and government agency relationships.


Fundraising & Cultivation:

  • Oversee Development Department staff on all cultivation and fundraising efforts and membership program strategies to ensure the achievement of annual fundraising targets.
  • Provide leadership and coordination in ongoing solicitation of individual, corporate, and foundation gifts.
  • Develop and implement the strategy for the annual fund process and oversee a succession strategy from membership to major donors.
  • Collaborate with program staff, education staff, and grant writer on foundation and government grants and reporting.
  • Manage the annual fundraising gala, in conjunction with the events staff, with the goal of achieving a set net revenue target. Develop and execute other major donor cultivation and stewardship events throughout the year.


  • Participate in the planning process and implement goals around identification, cultivation and individual solicitation plans for major gifts; prioritize efforts for maximum results. Participate in preparing annual fundraising goals, strategy and budget in consultation with Director of Institutional Advancement, development staff, the Board, and CEO/Executive Director.

Management & Supervision:

  • Set and guide priorities for the Development Department.
  • Oversee the supervision of personnel, which includes work allocation, staffing, vacation requests, training, and problem resolution; evaluate performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve maximum productivity and performance.

Financial Responsibility:

  • Broad financial responsibility including setting and meeting fundraising goals, evaluating results and developing corrective strategies as needed. Develop and manage departmental budget. Work with compliance officer to ensure that financial accounting of grants and gifts are maintained according to GASB standards.
  • Prepare reports as needed.
  • Oversee grants submission and grant reporting deadline calendar and grant process compliance.

  • Strong organizational and strategic planning skills
  • Excellent writing, verbal and presentation skills.
  • Knowledge and working experience with Raisers Edge fundraising software is required.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability with a commitment to the organization's mission is essential.
  • Excellent management and leadership capabilities in working with staff, board members, and fundraising volunteers
  • Demonstrated success in building and maintaining long-term relationships with constituents such as major donors, foundations, and corporations especially in the San Francisco Bay Area.
  • A successful track record of personally identifying, cultivating and soliciting individual donors, corporations and foundations.
  • A proven record of measurable results in organizing and implementing such activities as: major gifts, annual gifts, grant writing, corporate and foundation giving, direct mail and special events.


Bachelor's degree at a minimum. Three to five years of fundraising experience and a demonstrated track record of major donor solicitation. Must be a skilled leader, capable of directing, motivating, and inspiring volunteers and staff. High energy level, flexible, self-motivated, and self-confident. Articulate with strong oral and written communications skills. Strategic thinker; highly organized and able to meet deadlines. Strong time, budget, and organizational management skills, including the capacity to work on several projects simultaneously. Experience managing a planned giving program a plus.


Salary for this position is commensurate with other non-profit organizations and will be commensurate with experience.
