Volunteer Engagement Coordinator

In support of Chabot Space & Science Center's strategic plan and department goals and objectives, the Volunteer Engagement Coordinator provides support for the recruitment, orientation, placement, communications, recognition and retention of volunteers while fostering an inclusive, engaging and team-focused environment between the science center staff and the adult volunteer community. This role will be the liaison in staffing community outreach support. The Volunteer Engagement Coordinator will work with the Visitor Engagement Manager to provide coordination in scheduling and staffing for CSSC programs as well as assist in generating ideas for and delivery of activities that provide a "wow" factor for Chabot visitors.



Responsible for the administration of the adult volunteer program, including recruitment, training, scheduling, placement, recognition and evaluation of volunteers.

Work with staff to identify volunteer needs and capacity for CSSC programs & events, visitor engagement activities and community outreach.

Implement internal policies and procedures for the utilization of volunteer services.

Develop and maintain job descriptions for volunteer activities and define parameters and establish program guidelines for volunteer participation and staff engagement & oversight.

Work with the Public Programs Coordinator to identify volunteer staffing needs for the entire organization.

Conduct outreach and communicate with other organizations in support of CSSC volunteer programs & volunteer needs.

Maintain volunteer records through a regularly updated database.

Maintain and report volunteer hours served on a regular basis.

Help to plan, develop and implement effective volunteer recognition programs, including volunteer appreciation events and ongoing efforts to acknowledge volunteers.

Assist in monitoring volunteer program budget.


Assist volunteer screening, selection, and placement of volunteers in areas where they are comfortable yet challenged.

Develop and maintain relationships and on-going communication with volunteers through in-person meetings, telephone calls, volunteer events, mailing and e-mailings.

Provide resources for volunteer development through training and support.

Help to conduct annual surveys of volunteer satisfaction.

Facilitate excellent staff and volunteer relations.

Maintain volunteer lounge so it is a clean and inviting area.

Other duties as assigned.


Bachelor's Degree plus three years of successful experience in volunteer management, preferably within a non-profit organization.


Salary for this position is commensurate with other non-profit organizations and will be commensurate with experience.
