Birthday Activity Guide

This position is responsible for organizing & delivering birthday party activities and scout events. The Activity Guide/Host will work with children of all ages, their parents or caregivers, and scout leaders.

Responsiblities

  • Prep & deliver program activities (four themed parties; Polar Ice Cream, Pop Rocket, Edible Compost Hotel and Solar Car Challenge).
  • Prepare the learning environment, including set-up, preparing needed materials and inventorying supplies, initiating necessary repairs and monitoring condition of equipment and furnishings for everything used during birthday parties and scout events.
  • Prep Birthday/Scout space prior to opening and clean up room after closing each day.
  • Communicate with Group Sales Coordinator for specifics of scout event and/or birthday party activity.
  • Lead informal classes and teach effectively in the classroom.
  • Interact with and monitor children and parent/caregiver activities.
  • Report any problem that may occur with the children and/or their parents/caregivers to group sales coordinator
  • Maintain and improve organization of supplies and equipment

Scout Event Responsibilities:

  • Scout group duties include checking the group in, giving instructions as to the facility's resources, handing out schedules, collecting liability forms, passing out name tags, etc.
  • Check in with the instructor, astronomer, planetarium operator and other persons in charge of the various nights’ events to make sure that there are no issues related to the event.
  • Shadow the group throughout the night, responding to issues that arise.
  • Set up for the dinner, and either 1) introduce overnight host to group and transfer radio and responsibilities or 2) stay overnight with the group, maintaining radio contact with the scout leader and regularly checking center buildings to make sure that no scout is out walking at night.
  • The scout host may be required to set up for evening video in classroom, set up breakfast the following morning, go over the scavenger hunt form, pass out certificates, and check out the group
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Previous experience working with children and families in an educational setting
  • Excellent oral communication skills
  • Flexible team player and problem solver
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Outgoing, personable
  • Works well with children
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Interest in art, science, media, or early childhood education helpful
  • Must be able to lift 30lbs, occasionally climb ladder to storage.
  • Flexible to work holiday periods and weekend hours, punctual, and reliable.
  • Working knowledge of technology, especially Audio Video equipment- occasional troubleshooting may be involved.
  • Coursework in Early Childhood Education a plus
  • Training in first aid and/or CPR for children and infants a plus
  • A basic understanding of astronomy a plus

Compensation

Hourly salary for this position is commensurate with other non-profit organizations and will be commensurate with experience.
