Exhibits Intern

General Description

An exhibits internship at Chabot Space & Science Center provides hands-on, practical experience in exhibit development and design. Exhibits interns receive direct supervision from Chabot’s Exhibits Manager. Interns work as part of a team with the exhibits manager, exhibit content developers, exhibit technicians, and exhibit volunteers.

Depending on intern's interests and skills, projects may include participating in the following:

  • research and content development for new exhibits
  • exhibit design, model making, and prototyping
  • exhibit fabrication and installation
  • graphic design for signage, multimedia, and associated materials
  • collections management activities (cataloging, researching background, and restoration of artifacts and library collections)
  • developing and revising documentation on exhibits (both technical and content training documentation for floor staff and volunteers)
  • developing activity/demo kits for supplementary exhibit interpretation by floor staff
  • formative and summative evaluation of exhibits
  • researching traveling exhibits
  • administration of Chabot's traveling exhibits

Qualifications:

Required:

  • a strong interest in science and education
  • a desire to gain hands-on experience in exhibit development and the overall workings of a science museum.
  • creativity, flexibility, enthusiasm, and problem-solving skills
  • excellent research, writing, and verbal communication skills
  • strong computer skills

Desirable:

  • interest in a career in the museum field
  • experience with digital imaging, graphic design, and/or CAD software (Adobe Creative Suite, QuarkXPress, AutoCAD, etc.)
  • shop skills and experience using hand tools and power tools to work with wood, plastics, metals and paints
  • collections management experience

Eligibility:

Internships are open to undergraduate or graduate students, recent graduates, or other individuals with an interest in science, education, or museum professions. High school internships are not available at this time.

This internship is unpaid. If applicable, academic credit may be available through your college or university. Work schedule is flexible, but interns must make a commitment to a minimum of 12 hours/week for 3 months.
