Planetarium Presenter

Position Summary

Under general supervision and with a generalized knowledge of astronomy, the planetarium space science presenter helps prepare and presents planetarium shows and associated specialized programs to multiple audiences of all ages. In addition, the planetarium space science instructor helps conduct astronomy workshops and demonstrations and is engaged in all the general activities of the planetarium and observatories. This is a 0.5 FTE position.

Responsibilities

  • Presents planetarium programs to school children and the public.
  • Operates the planetarium projector and its associated equipment.
  • Participates in various aspects of show production such as content research, programming of audio-visuals, projector set-up, and script preparation.
  • Assists with Astronomy & Space Science Workshops, and participates in public astronomy & space science demonstrations.
  • Presents “Star Lab” classes as needed.
  • Participates in the general operation of the planetarium and its astronomy programs including general equipment care & maintenance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Excellent public speaking skills required (must be able to speak before an audience with poise, confidence, and clarity). Ability to present astronomy and respond to questions from groups or individuals with accuracy and clarity.
  • Interacts well with groups and individuals, including fellow-employees, school children, and the general public.
  • Must be able to be at work punctually on regular working hours and at other times as assigned.
  • Familiar with proper procedures for turning on and powering down computer systems.
  • Comfortable operating audio and video playback devices.
  • Able to change slide projector lamps (may require standing on a ladder).

Education/Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university with a background in astronomy or closely related field or equivalent experience. One to two years experience teaching children astronomy in a planetarium environment a plus.

Compensation

Hourly salary for this position is commensurate with other non-profit organizations and will be commensurate with experience.
