Public Programs Intern

Chabot Space & Science Center has an exciting opportunity for a creative, enthusiastic person who is seeking opportunities to develop skills in the areas of community collaboration and public program development. CSSC offers programs for a wide range of audiences and explores an exciting array of STEAM themes. From our monthly First Friday events and international film festivals to sci-fi lectures, the internship would play a vital role in assisting program staff to develop programmatic concepts and designs, organize content and participate in implementation and evaluation of our public offerings. The four-month internship (beginning mid-July– mid-November 2017) is designed to foster an understanding of how programs are built from the ground up for us to achieve our goal of providing unique and impactful experiences that inspire curiosity and participation. Interns will gain experience in: science education, event planning, museum programs and community engagement.

Eligibility
Work under the direction of the Director of Visitor Engagement and the Program & Community Partnerships Manager in helping to plan, and coordinate our public programs. Responsibilities include:

  • Research and compile a database of potential program partners, including local science oriented organizations, lecturers, community groups and stakeholders, musicians, artists, existing community organized events, etc.
  • Send email correspondences and phone calls to engage with local program partners and work with existing partners to develop program offerings.
  • Input content and help to maintain shared program calendars, create timelines for events and engage staff as needed for planning purposes.
  • As needed, post content to social media under the guidance of CSSC’s marketing and social media staff.
  • Help to implement events by creating supply lists, ordering and organizing supplies, helping with set-up and breakdown and oversee the success of the programs implementation by helping with day-of coordination working alongside CSSC staff.
  • Gather data from participants during programs and administering surveys and following up events with post reporting on data collected.
  • Assist with administrative tasks that support the public programs as needed.
What We Need:
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Comfortable speaking and interacting with all levels of staff
  • Outgoing demeanor; Enjoys interacting with individuals or groups from the general public.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented; Must be able to juggle multiple projects at one time and remain calm under pressure
  • Able to meet deadlines and complete projects under minimal supervision
  • Creative, enthusiastic, problem-solver and flexible; A desire to gain hands-on experience in event logistics and preparation; Previous customer service and event planning experience a plus; Must be computer literate; MS Office - Word, Excel, PowerPoint

Eligibility
Internships are open to undergraduate or graduate students, recent graduates or other individuals with an interest in event logistics and planning. This is a paid internship. If applicable, academic credit may be available through your college or university.

Supervisor
Reports to Public Programs Coordinator
Schedule: 16-20 hours a week, however flexible. Four-month commitment is required.

Availability
Flexible hours, including evenings and weekend

Compensation
This internship offers a stipend of $600 for the completion of four months.
