Brownie Space Explorer Try-It Badge

Blast off to an out-of-this world adventure exploring the realm of outer space. In this activity-based program, you’ll learn how to tell time by the sun, how the moon’s appearance changes and what causes the phases. You’ll find out how the Saturn V rocket worked, take a virtual trip to the moon with the Apollo astronauts, and learn what it’s like to be there. You’ll take a tour of Chabot’s historic telescopes and find out how they work and what astronomers use telescopes for.

In the dramatic dark sky of our planetarium, learn how to identify planets, stars, and constellations in the night sky and how to use a star map for the evening’s observing. Then make a projector for your flashlight, to display your favorite constellation.

The evening ends with observing through Chabot’s telescopes, weather permitting, and finding constellations and planets in the night sky.

Jr. Girl Scout Sky Search Badge

How do astronomers identify stars in the sky? Why do some stars appear brighter in the sky than others? We need Astronomers to search for the answers at our telescopes, planetarium, and exhibits. Activities focus on constellations, star-mapping, and planetary observations. Learn how to find and identify stars and constellations, and explore the moon up close and personal while learning facts and having fun. In this astronomy-based badge program, the sky is literally, the limit.

Blast off through the universe! In the Ask Jeeves Planetarium, learn about stars, galaxies, and black holes, and how to identify stars and constellations in the night sky. In a hands-on workshop, learn all about our Solar System, and its meteors, meteorites, comets and asteroids. You’ll also tour Chabot’s historic telescopes and find out how they work and what astronomers use telescopes for. You’ll get a chance to try out telescopes and binoculars on your own and learn how to aim them at objects in the night sky. The evening ends with observing through Chabot’s telescopes, weather permitting, and identifying stars, planets, and constellations in the night sky.

Boy Scout Astronomy Merit Badge

Can you identify constellations such as the Big Dipper and Cassiopeia? Chabot's Boy Scout program is tailored to assist you in completing the requirements for the Astronomy Merit Badge*. Topics will cover moon phases, our solar system and its evolution, which planets are visible during the day, how to track planets and why stars are different colors. You will also take an astronomer lead tour of our historic, giant telescopes and learn what makes each telescope unique. Then journey through the mysteries of space in the live planetarium presentation - Cosmos 360. Finally, you will put your astronomy knowledge to the test in a private astronomer led telescope viewing (weather permitting).  

*Please note: Preliminary research will be required before attending workshop for boy scouts to compete their badge requirements. Chabot does not provide merit badges and is not authorized to sign off on blue cards. Material learned at Chabot must be presented to an Astronomy Merit Badge Counselor to be signed off.
