Explore the world of asteroid hunters with Astronauts Ed Lu and Rusty Schweickart, co-founders of the B612 Foundation - a private foundation dedicated to protecting the Earth from asteroids. Lu and Schweickart will share the latest information on new technologies that help protect our Earth and plans to build, launch, and operate the first privately funded deep telescope. Hear how their time served as astronauts helped inspired them to protect our planet. Panel discussion followed by Q&A.

Speaker Bios

Dr. Ed Lu, Chairman & CEO B612 Foundation
Ed Lu is a former NASA astronaut who flew three space missions including 6 months on the International Space Station. From 2007-2010, he led the Advanced Projects group at Google, where his teams developed imaging technology for Google Earth/Maps, Google Street View, and energy information products including Google PowerMeter. He is the co-inventor of the Gravity Tractor, a spacecraft able to controllably alter the orbit of an asteroid.




Rusty Schweickart, Chair Emeritus B612 Foundation
Rusty Schweickart was the Lunar Module Pilot on the Apollo 9 Mission, March 3-13, 1969. From 1977-1979, Schweickart was Governor Jerry Brown’s Assistant for Science and Technology. He co-founded and served as Chairman of B612 Foundation from 2001-2011. In 2005, Schweickart founded and chaired the ASE-NEO Committee which, with its international Panel on Asteroid Threat Mitigation, produced and submitted to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) the seminal report Asteroid Threats: A Call for Global Response.
