Challenger Mission & History

Challenger Center for Space Science Education uses space exploration as a theme to create a positive learning experience that raises students' expectations of success; fosters in them a long-term interest in math, science, and technology; and motivates them to pursue studies in these areas.

Challenger Center for Space Science Education is a global not-for-profit organization created in 1986 by the families of the astronauts tragically lost in the last flight, 51-L, of the Challenger Space Shuttle. Dedicated to the educational spirit of that mission, Challenger Center develops learning centers and other educational programs worldwide to continue the mission to engage students in science and math education.

The Bay Area's Challenger Learning Center® at Chabot Space & Science Center joins a growing network in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. This network of learning centers is a recognized leader in educational simulation with a strong curriculum standards-based emphasis.

The Challenger Learning Center® offers programs for school and youth groups and corporate groups, as well as teacher workshops and classroom-based programs.
