Bill Nye's Climate Lab School Worksheets

Before your visit:

Bill Nye's Climate Lab is a science-rich exhibit with a wealth of hands-on activities and interactive exhibits. You may need to give your students very specific guidelines for what you want them to see and do during their visit. Chabot has created teacher resources to help you in this effort. We hope you find the following suggestions and downloadable worksheets useful before, during and after your visit.

These resources have been designed to provide an orientation to Bill Nye's Climate Lab and allow you to customize the student experience during a visit. We recommend that you review each set of worksheets and use those that best match your students' grade/age levels, the amount of time that you'll have in the exhibit area, and your preference for open-ended or content specific worksheets.

1. Teacher's Guide

This pocket-sized reference will help teachers guide their students through the exhibit. There is so much information and so many activities, teachers may want to steer their classes towards certain displays or areas. The guide includes suggestions for "Before and After” activities for the classroom.

2. Question and Answer Materials

These materials ask students a range of "Q&A” type questions. The answers are generally found right within the exhibit displays. The trifold covers the entire exhibit, and the single subject worksheets are provided for teachers who may have limited time or would prefer their students to focus on one area of the exhibit.

3. Open-Ended Materials

These materials are meant to be slightly more challenging. Students are required to synthesize the information in the exhibit, draw conclusions, and state their own opinions. It may be useful to review the questions as a group before entering the exhibit or in class before the trip. The trifold covers the entire exhibit, and the single subject worksheets are provided for teachers who may have limited time or would prefer their students to focus on one area of the exhibit. The booklet contains the same questions at the trifold and covers the entire exhibit, but is printed on two sheets of paper to give the students more room to respond.

4. Check-Off Page

This hand-out is meant to provide primary students with a check list to keep track of what they see in the exhibit. Please do not use this resource as a scavenger-hunt. Students should walk slowly and carefully through the exhibit and participate in the activities.

Important Notes:

One fascinating aspect of the Lab is the Climate Scout ID badges. These badges track a visitor's journey through the exhibit and can display the number of solutions visited at Seeds of Change, the large avatar display at the middle of the lab. In the interest of making the most of your visit, it may be necessary to ask students to visit the screen just once at the end of their visit, or encourage them to check their progress online at home or in the classroom.

Please also note that you will have a predetermined time slot in the BNCL exhibit and the amount of time allotted will be determined by the number of visitors on the date of your field trip.
