Really Cool Experiences Happen After Dark

Chabot offers many wonderful experiences, many of them After Dark. Whether you are looking for a unique date night experience or a fun place to search for galaxies and nebula, Chabot has something for everyone. We are open late every Friday and Saturday evenings and feature telescope viewing from our three giant telescopes, weather permitting of course. In addition, we will have special events, lectures and parties for many occasions including group events and corporate team building.

From time to time we rent out our Center for weddings, corporate holiday parties and private events. Check our calendar for those dates.

  • Cosmic Concerts

    Cosmic Concerts

    $15 / $24 including General Admission
    You don't have to leave our galaxy to see some far-out talent. Local musicians Greg Ashley of the psychedelic rock band, The Gris-Gris, and John Morgan of the John Brother Piano Company turn our theater into a magical realm where science and music collide to produce a unique concert experience. Engage your own innate musicality and creativity by learning how to make simple instruments from common materials or start an impromptu jam session. Maybe you'll be inspired to form your own band!

    Lay on the grass and look up at the stars! Bring your sleeping bags and blankets and listen to an expert stargazer explain the mythology behind the constellations, share stories of the night sky as seen throughout history, and identify planets and stars that help orient you to the night sky.

    Enjoy an easy 1-2 mile end-of-summer hike through the beautiful redwoods and watch the sun set over the bay! After the hike, stay and explore other amazing objects in the night sky through our telescopes (weather permitting) or tour the Telescope Makers Workshop. Hike will take place rain or shine.

Adventure awaits as you work on an exclusive team with other couples to rescue the space transport capsule from calamity! You and your date will be transported to a world of space travel inside Chabot's exclusive and interactive onsite mission control and spacecraft simulator. The adventure includes romantic music, hands on assignments, beer and wine, and sweets for your sweet. Arrive on time things are precise in Mission Control!

    Ask a Scientist Lecture Series &
    Wonderfest: The Bay Area Beacon of Science

    Chabot is proud to partner with Ask a Scientist and Wonderfest to host this enlightening lecture, "A Planet for Goldilocks," about the search for other planets that might harbor life. The quest to find Earth-like planets has captivated our imagination for centuries and has been the goal of NASA's Kepler mission since 2009. Dr. Natalie Batalha, co-investigator on the Kepler mission and director of the Systems Teaching Institute at NASA Research Park, leads the presentation taking us on the Kepler spacecraft's search for planets that can sustain life. Dr. Batalha began her research on extrasolar planet detection and stellar astrophysics at NASA in 2000 and has published numerous papers on her findings.

    The observatory deck opens at 2am for a special presentation about the eclipse. Stay after the presentation for the late night viewing festivities. A Lunar Eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through the shadow of the Earth. For this to happen the Sun, Earth, and Moon must be closely aligned with the Moon and the Moon located furthest from the Sun. Bring binoculars, blankets and warm clothes.

    Constructing a New Gaming Genre

    Twenty years ago, a video game that you could neither win nor lose was inconceivable unless you were Will Wright. With five years of college under his belt and no degree, then twenty-something year old Wright created a game based on designing and building cities. In achieving that goal, Will created a new genre in gaming and within it, one of the best-loved game franchises in history, SimCity. An entirely new kind of video game genre, focused on open-ended, non-violent gameplay was born! Hear Will discuss his journey and his upcoming projects.

Narrated by Latin Grammy Award winner Lila Downs, Tales of the Maya Skies transports us to the jungles of Mexico, presenting the rich history and culture of the ancient Maya. Using the latest three dimensional laser scanning and advanced graphic techniques, Tales of the Maya Skies weaves together the richness of Maya culture, stories, science and contributions to our way of life.

Experience a rocket launch from inside the body of an astronaut. Explore the amazing worlds of inner & outer space, from floating around the International Space Station to maneuvering through microscopic regions of the human body. Narrated by Ewan McGregor.
