Astronomy Class for Adults

Chabot Space & Science Center offers the following astronomy courses for adults:

Introduction to Astronomy
Sundays, Sept. 14 - Oct. 19th, 2003, 7:30-9:30 pm

A six-week astronomy course designed especially for adults who are curious about the universe surrounding them and want to learn more. This non-mathematical class will spend time in the planetarium, observatories, and classrooms, and employ guest speakers who are experts on their subjects.

Course Outline:
Session 1 - Motions of the Earth & sky, including historical conceptions
Session 2 - Solar System: the Inner Planets
Session 3 - Solar System: the Outer Planets
Session 4 - Stars/birth, life, death
Session 5 - The Universe: galaxies/cosmology
Session 6 - Modern Astronomy: adaptive optics, extrasolar planets (what is a planet?), SETI

• Attendees will received a resource guide for further exploration on their own.
• Attendees will also receive a 10% discount in the Starry Nights Gift Store during the duration of the class.

Cost: $55 for Chabot members, $65 for non-members.

Emphasis will be on observing techniques, using a telescope, locating various objects, coordinate systems, and advanced astronomical concepts. Anyone who has taken Chabot's introductory astronomy class, or an astronomy class in high school or college and feels comfortable with basic astronomy, is welcome to attend.

Cost: $55 for Chabot members, $65 for non-members.
