Ask
one of the girls in the Female Involvement in Real Science and
Technology (FIRST) project what she'd like to be when she grows up.
You are likely to hear about a career in science. Unlike many girls
who lose interest and confidence in science, girls in FIRST hold onto
their dreams of becoming engineers, doctors, and astronauts.
With a grant from the National Science Foundation, the FIRST program
has created an informal setting for girls
to engage in hands-on science at elementary and middle
schools in the Oakland Unified School District. The California School
for the Blind in Fremont, California joined the FIRST program this
year and will continue to be funded through the 2000-2001 school year.
