EARTH SCIENCE AND
CLIMATE CHANGE INSTITUTE
Teacher Institute for 5th and 6th Grade
OUSD Teachers
June 15 - 26, 2009
About the Institute
Chabot Space & Science Center is launching its first
Earth Science and Climate Change Teacher Institute. This
two-week Institute will prepare OUSD teachers to engage
their students in Earth science and climate change topics
such as: energy in the Earth system, climate, causes of
climate change and solutions to human impacts on climate
change. Our team of astronomy, biology, geology, and
environmental science instructors has carefully crafted a
curriculum specifically designed to be taught to 5th and 6th
grades students. Each day of the Institute will include a
blending of science content, hands-on activities and the
resources necessary to teach this unit in your classroom.
The Institute will provide:
- Standards-based professional development with time
to plan and discuss the implementation of Earth science
and climate change curriculum with other OUSD teachers,
Chabot staff and guest speakers.
- Students the opportunity to utilize and understand
scientific data about their local environments, as well
as make connections to global data collected by
scientists around the world.
- A strong focus on solutions so students can actively
contribute to solving how to reduce their own carbon
footprint.
- Journaling techniques that students can use to keep
notebooks of their experiences and understanding of
their investigations.
- Opportunities to meet with peers to discuss
implementation plans
An enrichment field trip to a potential site for class
visits.
- Take home teaching kit worth up to $500 with the
tools, images, and activities needed to implement the
curriculum in your classroom.
- A $1000 stipend for completion of the two week
Institute.
We hope you will join us this summer and take advantage
of this unique opportunity to embrace a topic which is
becoming more and more important in our daily lives.
