SEPTEMBER: Falling Objects

Gravity is pulling us (and everything else!) toward the center of our earth. This month we'll explore the invisible force of gravity to see how it affects falling objects and balance. Then we'll build parachutes to slow the pull of gravity so our astronauts don't crash to the ground. Finally, we'll experiment with different ways to launch an object and escape the pull of gravity... for a few seconds, at least.

  • Day 1 - September 16: The Gravity of the Situation
    (10am or 1pm)
Watch gravity in action as you conduct several experiments to test gravity's pull on all the objects around us. Then test your sense of balance by finding your own center of gravity. Finally, see if you can you stack a tower of books that seems to defy gravity!
  • Day 2 - September 23: What Comes Up...
    (10am or 1pm)
...Must come down! Design your own parachutes to work against the power of gravity! Can you build a parachute that allows a space capsule to safely fall to the ground without crashing?
  • Day 3 - September 30: Escaping Gravity
    (10am or 1pm)
Join us this week as we discover different ways to launch objects into the air against the pull of gravity! How many ways can you think of?
  • Saturday, September 20: What Comes Up...
    (2pm)
...Must come down! Design your own parachutes to work against the power of gravity! Can you build a parachute that allows a space capsule to safely fall to the ground without crashing?

OCTOBER: What's Up With This Weather?

Now that the weather is starting to change, let's take a closer look at what's happening outside. Learn all about different types of weather and clouds, go on a special hike to observe and measure the weather, and build your very own tools to collect weather data at home.

  • Day 1 - October 7: It's Raining, It's Pouring
    (10am or 1pm)
Hone your meteorologist skills as you describe the different types of weather and precipitation. You'll put those skills to good use as we head outside... into the weather... and use different weather tools and instruments to measure the weather.
  • Day 2 - October 14: Build it
    (10am or 1pm)
This week you'll design and build your own weather tools to take home. Practice using our authentic weather tools for inspiration in your own designs. Can you think of a way to measure temperature? What about a way to catch and measure the rain or wind?
  • Day 3 - October 21: Don't Rain On My Parade
    (10am or 1pm)
Are all clouds the same? Will they all rain on me? Take a look at lots of types of clouds to see how they are all different, then go on a cloud hunt to find real clouds in the sky, and finally discover how clouds are made by modeling the water cycle.
  • Saturday, October 18: Build it!
    (2pm)
Join us as we design and build our own weather tools to take home. Practice using our authentic weather tools for inspiration in your own designs. Can you think of a way to measure temperature? What about a way to catch and measure the rain or wind?
