Really Cool Experiences Happen After Dark

Chabot offers many wonderful experiences, many of them After Dark. Whether you are looking for a unique date night experience or a fun place to search for galaxies and nebula, Chabot has something for everyone. We are open late every Friday and Saturday evenings and feature telescope viewing from our three giant telescopes, weather permitting of course. In addition, we will have special events, lectures and parties for many occasions including group events and corporate team building.

From time to time we rent out our Center for weddings, corporate holiday parties and private events. Check our calendar for those dates.

    Building a Mini Sun to Save the Earth

    Scientists are continuously discovering new ways to harness the energy of the Sun and stars to meet Earth's energy needs. Dr. Edward Moses is leading efforts to explore ways to commercialize the power of lasers to provide environmentally friendly energy for our future. Using Laser Ignition Fusion Energy, LIFE, Moses is exploring this new type of laser fusion power plant that would produce no greenhouse gas emissions, operate continuously to meet demand, and produce shorter-lived and less hazardous radioactive byproducts than current power plants.

    Join us and learn about the incredible dogs and trainers of Alameda Search and Rescue! Mark Herrick will bring his dog, Kapo, to share training secrets and demonstrate Kapo's incredible sniffing ability. Audience participation is encouraged; one volunteer will be chosen to hide and be found by Kapo's powerful nose! The demonstration will begin at 7pm.

    Please note: All waiver forms must be signed before your dog can join the fun! Also, our planetarium and observatory deck will be a "dog-free" area during these hours. If you plan to see shows or our telescopes, we advise you not to bring your dog to the Center. Dogs will not be permitted to be left in cars.

Because of Apollo's stellar achievements, its creators believed that the fruit of their efforts would take us beyond the Moon and become the fundamental vehicle for the decades beyond the Apollo 17 mission.     Each Sunday preceding the 1st quarter moon, the Eastbay Astronomical Society invites you to a special private telescope viewing. Unlike our regular viewing on Friday and Saturday evenings, EAS personalizes the experience by taking viewing requests, live interaction, and hosting tours and it's exclusively for our members!

    The Future of Saving Sound
    Dr. Carl Haber takes us on a journey of sound. Listen to the earliest known sound recordings, learn how the process has changed throughout history, and what scientists are doing to restore our oldest relics. From the first sounds recorded by Thomas Edison in 1877 to the 1950's, when most recordings were made on wax, foil, shellac, lacquer and plastic, Haber discusses the importance of preserving these treasures. Enjoy listening to samples of some of these rare archived works.
