Below are brief descriptions of the types of positions Galileo offered in 2013, at Chabot Space & Science Camp as well as at several locations throughout the Bay Area. While we're not hiring for summer just yet, we are currently hiring a Chabot Program Director. The Program Director position is a rare opportunity to work closely with Chabot Space & Science Center to direct the program, managing everything from staff selection and hiring to camp operations to curriculum development, and serve as a member of the Galileo Summer Quest Curriculum Team. Typically high school students, Summer Interns are the Renaissance staff of our summer team. They're sign makers, attendance takers, office assistants, lesson helpers, game leaders, skit planners and all-around can-doers who work to keep camp running smoothly. Internships are paid and available to applicants who will be 16 or older by May 31, 2014.
Team Leaders play the central role in each Camp Galileo camper's summer experience, managing their own teams of pre-K - 5th graders. Generally college students, Team Leaders build team spirit, develop individual relationships with their campers (and their campers' parents), assist instructors in the classroom and have seemingly limitless amounts of energy. Experience leading packs of kids in costume and writing boisterous cheers comes in handy, but isn't required.
Usually college students or recent graduates, Assistant Instructors inspire and motivate 3rd - 8th graders through their crucial role in the classroom. Moving with ninja-like efficiency, ready with what campers and Lead Instructors need before they even know they need it, Assistant Instructors provide invaluable instructional and camper management support, form lasting relationships with campers and come stocked with endless reserves of positivity, curiosity and collaborative spirit.
Most often college-graduate educators, Lead Instructors are keepers of the camp curriculum and performers of inspiring acts of education. Lead Instructors bring learning to life for pre-K - 8th graders across every Galileo camp, teaching science, technology, outdoors and the arts. Backed by our wildly inventive year-round curriculum team, world-class education partners and an innovation process adapted from the Stanford d.school, Lead Instructors of all fields and backgrounds lead and inspire inside every classroom, often making career-defining discoveries in the process. Their bag of tricks includes experience leading kids, the ability to create a safe and spirited learning environment and a passion for project-based teaching.
- Technology: Classes range from Lego Robotics to Video Game Design to so much more. All tech-savvy excellent educators welcome.
- Outdoors: All Outdoors Lead Instructors teach teambuilding and collaboration skills, and some teach specialized classes. All outdoor & informal educators welcome.
- Science: Teach general science classes or specialty classes ranging from go-kart building to forensics. All scientists and excellent educators welcome.
- Art: Teach general art classes or specialty classes ranging from comic books to photography. All artists and excellent educators welcome.
Camp Leadership roles exist at all camps in slightly different forms and fusions. What they all have in common is close collaboration with Camp Directors, a strong hand in managing operations and a goal of making camp amazing for every camper. A few role specifics:
- Assistant Camp Director
Inspiring leaders of staff, enthusiastic builders of positive and unforgettable camper programming, Assistant Camp Directors work closely with their Camp Director to provide overall leadership for camp programs. Assistant Camp Directors manage staff and lead many camp activities, often including the camp's Extended Care program. Natural born leaders, initiative takers and characters of all kinds encouraged.
- Extended Care Coordinator
Extended Care Coordinators oversee all aspects of the camp location's Extended Care Program. We are looking for a dynamic, flexible individual who will help us shape this new camp staff role. Working closely with the Camp Director and Operations Coordinator, Extended Care Coordinators are responsible for ensuring a high level of camper safety, strong program delivery, and quality staff, camper, and parent experience. You will help generate enthusiasm and inspire our campers after the traditional end of camp, where they will engage in additional activities and structured down-time.
- Operations Coordinator
The organized face of camp operations, customer service, and parent peace of mind, each camp's Operations Coordinator provides administrative support to the Camp Director and the camp staff. Multi-tasking mavens, computer pros and project management gurus welcome.
Camp Directors preside over staff selection and supervision, manage day-to-day operations and serve as the smiling faces of camp in their communities. Undeniable leaders and skilled collaborators, Camp Directors interact masterfully with campers, parents and community members, while working with their staff teams to craft their camp’s unique traditions and personality.
Regional Lead Instructors and Team Leaders provide multiple camps in a geographic region with leadership and support throughout the summer. Generally veterans in their areas of responsibility, Regional Staff feel comfortable jumping in wherever's needed - on different staff teams, with different groups of campers, teaching different curricula. Leadership skills required, gymnast-like flexibility a plus.
Substitute Lead Instructors and Team Leaders are an elite force of flexible staff that fill in for planned and last minute summer staff absences. A perfect opportunity for those open to or requiring a shorter summer commitment, substitutes fill in for absences lasting a day, a week, and sometimes longer. To appropriately compensate these staff for the on-call nature of these positions, substitute compensation includes potential for a sizeable summer bonus.
