The process
demonstrated by "Cratering" occurs throughout the solar system. Most of the
solid
planets, and their moons, possess impact craters. This picture shows the
crater-peppered surfaces of the planet Mercury (left) and the
Earth's Moon (top right), compared to the very similar, but much
smaller-scale cratering of the Planetary Landscapes
artwork (lower right).

How
It Works: In
"Cratering," visitors drop
small clumps of fine powder into a
tub containing the same substance,
creating fields of craters of a
range of sizes and overlapping
patterns.
