On Sept 2, 2009 (Sept 3 GMT), Jupiter's four
large Galilean moons performed a rare vanishing act:
For a time on this day, all four moons disappeared into the
disk of Jupiter. Io and Callisto passed behind
Jupiter, while Europa and Ganymede crossed in front of it.
Chabot Observatory's first
Director, Charles Burckhalter, observed a similar Galilean
disappearance on Oct 21, 1913.
