The “Needle Galaxy” is a beautiful example of a Spiral Galaxy, maybe like our own Milky Way, seen edge-on.  The flatness of the spiral disk and the prominence of the central bulge are highlighted when viewed from this direction.  Also, the dark, obscuring dust in the spiral arms can be easily seen cutting in front of the bulge.
