Veil Nebula

Go Back

The Veil Nebula is a supernova remnant in the constellation Cygnus.  Also known as the Cygnus Loop and the Witch's Broom Nebula. Discovered by William Herschel in 1784, this nebula spans an area of sky equal to about six times the diameter of the Moon.  The supernova that produced this gas cloud exploded between 5000 and 8000 years ago. Its distance is not accurately known, but is estimated to be between 1400 and 2600 light years away.
