Messier Object 27, also called the "Dumbbell Nebula," is a planetary nebula about 1,250 light years away.  A planetary nebula is an expanding shell of gas shed by a Sun-massed star that has reached the end of its life on the Main Sequence.  The Dumbbell was the first planetary nebula ever discovered, by Charles Messier in 1764.
