For Ages 3 - 5 years

Expand your preschooler's universe by enrolling in our Tyke Explorers Workshop or Tyke Explorers Open Lab. Kids get to bring a special grown-up to share in the excitement of science and space. Workshops change weekly and are a combination of instructor-led lessons and self-guided, hands-on experimentation and exploration while the Labs are an open-ended sensory exploration of various materials and tools that change monthly.

FEBRUARY: Light Fantastic!
Tuesdays, 10am or 1pm

This month is all about light! We’ll play with shadows by blocking light, we’ll make rainbows by splitting light, and we’ll make a mirror maze by reflecting light. What else can you do with light?

  • Day 1: Shadow Play - Feb 10, 10am or 1pm
This week we’ll play with light and dark to figure out how shadows work. We’ll go on a shadow hunt, find out what types of materials make the best shadows, and use shadows to make art.
  • Day 2: Rainbows Without the Rain - Feb 17, 10am or 1pm
Have you ever seen a rainbow when there wasn’t any rain? Join us as we figure out what a rainbow actually is and how we can make our own!
  • Day 3: Mirror Mirror - Feb 24, 10am or 1pm
Explain the magic of mirrors using science! Learn how light can be reflected with mirrors in the best way possible…by playing with mirrors! Then use light and reflection to build a kaleidoscope and a mirror maze.
  • Saturday, Feb 21: Mirror Mirror - 2pm
Explain the magic of mirrors using science! Learn how light can be reflected with mirrors in the best way possible…by playing with mirrors! Then use light and reflection to build a kaleidoscope and a mirror maze.

MARCH: Pondering Earth’s Past and Present
Tuesdays, 10am or 1pm
Saturday, 2pm

Spring is in the air, so let’s head outside and learn about our earth! We’ll take a look at the surface of the earth and see how it might have changed over time, and then we’ll try to figure out which things on earth are living and which are not. Finally we’ll dig below the surface to see what types of fossils might be hiding below the surface…including dinosaurs!

  • Day 1: A Changing Earth - March 10, 10am or 1pm
Earth has been through a lot of changes over the last 4.5 billion years, and this week we’ll find out why! Using stream tables and the power of water, you’ll create changing landscapes just like the ones we see on earth!
  • Day 2: Life on Earth - March 17, 10am or 1pm
Our earth is home to millions of living species! This week, we’ll head outside to hunt for some of them, figure out how to tell the difference between something living and something non-living, and learn how our earth is able to keep so many things alive!
  • Day 3: Earth’s Time Machine - March 24, 10am or 1pm
Let’s use fossils to travel back in time and see the creatures that lived here on earth before us. Discover how fossils form and what we can learn from them, handle real fossils, and make one to take home.
  • Day 4: Time for Dinosaurs! - March 31, 10am or 1pm
Dinosaurs lived a long time ago, but how long is that? Explore the geologic time scale to get a sense of Earth’s past, learn about the clues Earth gives us to figure out when and where dinosaurs lived, and make your very own dinosaur habitat to take home.
  • Saturday, March 21: Earth’s Time Machine - 2pm
Let’s use fossils to travel back in time and see the creatures that lived here on earth before us. Discover how fossils form and what we can learn from them, handle real fossils, and make one to take home.

APRIL: This Pretty Planet
Tuesdays, 10am & 1pm
Saturday, 2pm

It’s April, so that means Earth Day is coming up! Let’s celebrate by learning more about our home planet and what we can do to help our earth. We’ll keep items from ending up in the landfill by learning to reduce, reuse, recycle, and compost our waste. Then we’ll investigate a very special organism that helps make nutritious compost from food scraps!

  • Day 1: The Three R’s - April 14, 10am or 1pm
Get ready for Earth Day by learning about the three R’s…Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! Find out how you can help save Earth’s resources by reducing how much you use, reusing when possible, and recycling what’s left. Then put your new knowledge to work by building with recycled and reused materials.
  • Day 2: Do the Rot Thing - April 21, 10am or 1pm
Keep your food scraps out of the landfill by composting them instead. Dig into Chabot’s vermicompost bins to see what types of waste can be composted, and learn how worms and other critters turn our food waste into rich, nutritious compost to feed our plants.
  • Day 3: Wiggly Worms - April 28, 10am or 1pm
Get to know the wiggly worms that make vermicompost for our garden. You’ll have the opportunity to observe and handle real worms, learn about their body parts and how they move, and conduct an experiment to find out what kind of food they like the best!
  • Saturday, April 18: Do the Rot Thing - 2pm
Keep your food scraps out of the landfill by composting them instead. Dig into Chabot’s vermicompost bins to see what types of waste can be composted, and learn how worms and other critters turn our food waste into rich, nutritious compost to feed our plants.
